The role of the pelvis in sport
The pelvis provides a bony link between the flexible spine and the lower limbs. Its main function is to transmit forces and assist balance - it provides attachment sites for over 35 muscles.
The pelvis must be able to absorb and transmit forces efficiently for optimal function of the spine and lower limbs. It is important to consider the complex interaction of the various joints, ligaments, muscles and nerves of lumbo-pelvic-hip region when actively engaging in sports activities.
Pelvis dysfunction occurs as a result of
Short Term Trauma:
Such as direct impact / acute injuries
Long Term Strain:
Such as repetitive movements while exercising
Incorrect Posture:
Such as exercising while there are muscle imbalances present in the body
Some common sporting injuries that may be caused by a SIJ imbalance:
- low back problems- hip & groin injuries
- ilio-tibial band (ITB) related problems
- hamstring strains
- anterior knee pain
- lower limb problems
