What causes pelvic pain/dysfunction?
The hormone relaxin is thought to play a role in increased ligament laxity during pregnancy. As a result the pelvis and its associated joints exhibit excessive mobility due to relaxation of the pelvic ligaments.
As a result, these joints move more during and just after pregnancy. It is thought that this softening, along with postural changes, muscle weakness and differences in the movement occurring between the left and right pelvic joints can cause too much stress on the joints and ligaments of the pelvis.
Women who suffer from pelvic girdle pain are thought to perform normal activities such as standing, walking and bending with a less stable or 'unlocked' pelvis. The result is inflammation or pain.
