Muscle Energy Technique

MET involves the use of the patients own muscular efforts by performing a gentle contraction with gentle resistance provided by the therapist and is used to treat both muscle and joint restrictions. It is very safely applied to the spine and used to treat acute pain and spasm. At Spinal Synergy Physiotherapy it is one of our most widely used manual therapy techniques and we are very experienced in applying MET for treating a wide range of conditions.

Muscle Energy Techniques can be used to:

  • Lengthen a shortened, contracted or hypertonic muscle
  • Strengthen a weakened muscle or group of muscles
  • Deactivating trigger points
  • Mobilize a joint with restricted mobility

MET can be used in isolation but more commonly in combination with other appropriate treatment techniques including joint manipulations, myofascial release, trigger point work, soft tissue manipulation, massage therapy and rehabilitation. MET is a central treatment technique used by all our physiotherapists to enhance the effect of various treatment procedures.

Our physiotherapists have received specialized training in using MET and Taso Lambridis has been using MET since 1999 and was trained in this method in the United Kingdom. He now teaches other Physiotherapists on how to apply this technique to the spine, pelvis & hips.
