A key focus at Spinal Synergy is to return our patients to their pre-injury activities but more importantly to reduce the risk of re-injury. The Dynamic Movement Screen is a two part assessment, first a Functional Movement Screen (FMS) and then the Y-Balance test for upper and lower quarters. Both the FMS and Y-Balance tests are based on extensive research into the contributing factors to the re-occurrence of injuries. The FMS & Y-Balance tests are widely used by professional sports teams & athletes as part of their injury prevention programs; it is also used in certain occupations (fire fighters, police & the army) to determine safe return to work following injuries. Research has consistently demonstrated that your greatest risk to re-injury is faulty movement patterns and right-to-left body asymmetries. Continuing to move and load muscles and joints using poor movement patterns results in suboptimal performance and increased injury risk. The FMS identifies faulty movement patterns that contribute to re-injury and aims to improve performance through specific corrective exercises. It consists of 7 fundamental movement tests that require balance, mobility and stability to assist in the identification of key weaknesses and imbalances. The Y-balance consists of 2 tests to determine symmetry and identify those at greater risk of injury. It tests your dynamic balance while you stand on one leg or balance on one hand. Research has shown that those who do not perform well on this test are more likely to get injured.
- The lower quarter Y-balance test requires strength, flexibility, core control and proprioception. It has been used to assess physical performance, identify chronic ankle and ACL instability, and identify athletes at greater risk for lower extremity injury.
- The upper quarter is a dynamic measure of trunk control designed to test the trunk and upper extremity while in a pushup position. Mobility and stability are both maximally challenged during the test. During each reach component, scapular stability, mobility, thoracic rotation and core stability are combined to reach as far as possible without losing balance.
A common cause of injuries is movement asymmetries and imbalances between sides of the body; this then leads to compensation, substitution patterns of movement and limitations – our physios are certified & trained in performing the Dynamic Movement Screen.
